A more peaceful Holiday Season

Your Guide to a More Peaceful Holiday

The holidays are coming — that magical stretch of time when joy, chaos, and family dynamics all collide under one roof (with a side of mashed potatoes). Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Solstice – this time of year has a way of testing our patience and our nervous systems.

At Insight Counseling and Wellness, we’re big believers that peace doesn’t just happen — you have to plan for it, protect it, and occasionally sneak it in between courses. So here’s our very real, very practical guide to finding calm in the holiday storm.

1. The 60-Second Reset (yes, even at the dinner table)

You don’t need a yoga mat or a Himalayan salt lamp. You need a moment.

Here’s what to do:

  • Put your feet flat on the ground.

  • Take a slow breath in through your nose (no one will notice — they’ll be too busy passing the rolls).

  • Exhale through your mouth like you’re cooling soup.

  • Notice three things you can see, two things you can feel, and one thing you can hear.

Congratulations — you just gave your nervous system a mini spa day without leaving your chair.

2. The Art of the Strategic Exit

You are allowed to step away. In fact, we highly encourage it.

Need a breather? Offer to “check on the oven,” “get more ice,” or “see if the dog needs to go out.” These are the socially acceptable exits that buy you two minutes of silence and a deep breath in the garage, pantry, or yes — even the bathroom.

Pro tip: stash a piece of chocolate or gum wherever you retreat. Emotional support snacks are highly underrated.

3. Rehearse Your Boundaries Like It’s a Script

If Aunt Carol always asks, “When are you having kids?” or your cousin loves debating politics, don’t go in unarmed.
Have your responses ready:

  • “You know, you’ll have to ask me that next year.”

  • “I love you, but let’s skip that topic before we both need therapy.”

  • “Refill?” (A timeless redirection.)

Boundaries can be kind and firm — while adding in a little humor.

4. Manage the Expectation Hangover

The idea of a “perfect holiday” exists only in commercials where everyone wears coordinated sweaters. Real life has burnt cookies, mismatched wrapping paper, and someone forgetting the cranberry sauce (again).

Try this: choose one thing that matters most to you — maybe it’s lighting the menorah together, watching that cheesy Hallmark movie, or just surviving dinner without passive-aggressive commentary — and let that be your focus. Everything else? Optional.

5. Schedule Your Recharge Like a Meeting

You wouldn’t skip a work meeting (well… not often). Treat your self-care time the same way.

Before the season begins, block out time for things that genuinely calm you — a walk, journaling, a few minutes of quiet before bed. Protect that time. Label it “important meeting” if you need to.

6. Let “Good Enough” Be Your Mantra

The gifts don’t have to be perfect. The house doesn’t have to sparkle. The food can be slightly burnt and still be delicious. “Good enough” is not failure — it’s freedom.

Repeat after us: “Good enough is great this year.”

7. Remember, Peace Isn’t Found — It’s Created

Sometimes peace looks like lighting candles and breathing deeply. Sometimes it’s stepping outside in the cold for a moment of quiet. Sometimes it’s laughing so hard with your family that your face hurts.

However it shows up for you — lean into it.

From all of us at Insight Counseling and Wellness, we wish you a season filled with warmth, humor, boundaries, and small, sacred moments of calm.
